  1. THIS HYPERTEXT SYSTEM

  4.     This is a first cut of the hypertext version of a Ph.D. dissertation on
  5.     the topic of hypertext itself. The hard copy of the dissertation was
  6.     produced in 1991, at Texas Woman's University, School of Library and
  7.     Information Studies, by Ernest R. Perez.
  8.  
  9.     This hyperdocument contains four complementary avenues of access:
  10.  
  11.        1) The highly linear progression of the academic paper;
  12.        2) The limited hierarchy provided by the Table of Contents node;
  13.        3) The "Glossary" module, a limited online KWOC index to the
  14.        contents;
  15.        4) The SEARCH text-searching module, for free-text access.
  16.  
  17.     This hypertext document is free for copying, however please use
  18.     standard citation and acknowledgement practices in the event you use
  19.     quotations or unique concepts. If you're really doing heavyweight
  20.     scholarly stuff, you'll probably have to refer to the hard copy of the
  21.     official dissertation. I removed original pagination from this
  22.     hypertext version, sorry 'bout that. Or, you can experiment with
  23.     citation forms referencing this electronic version.

  25.     The hypertext uses the HYPLUS runtime software developed by MaxThink,
  26.     Inc. of Berkeley CA. The MaxThink software was in fact the case study
  27.     subject for the dissertation.

  29.     MaxThink publishes a full line of hypertext and authoring system
  30.     products, particular suited for organizing complex hypertext systems.
  31.  
  32.     MaxThink currently (4/92) produces an Accounting/Auditing reference
  33.     hypertext on CD-ROM, for one of the Big 6 accounting firms. This system
  34.     currently contains approximately 200 megabytes of file space, in some
  35.     80,000 screens, with approximately 300,000 hypertext links. That's SOME
  36.     hypertext system organization and management task! Details of this
  37.     operation are covered in the dissertation text.
